The first thing you notice about Esther is her smile. According to her mom, Esther was always smiling as a baby, and that’s still true today. Outgoing, cheery, and kind, Esther radiates warmth to her friends and family, our cats, and everyone she meets.
That caring has also guided Esther’s career. After getting a masters degree in urban planning, she helped communities prepare for, and recover from, hurricanes and other natural disasters. Inspired by what she saw, she is now pursuing a second masters in public health.
Esther loves nature, the beach, and travel. Last year, she planted a bird and butterfly garden in our front yard, and was thrilled when flocks of goldfinches came to feast on our sunflowers. She also makes wonderful guacamole and bakes delicious butterscotch brownies.
Esther was born in a small town in the Yucatan and grew up in the Dallas area. She has six sisters and three brothers, who, with the exception of her youngest brother, live in Mexico. As a child, she enjoyed being around lots of siblings and cousins. She visits her family in Mexico at least once a year and always looks forward to meeting new members of the family and giving them their first bunny stuffed animal. She stays in touch with her family by phone and is tickled when the little ones ask to speak on the phone with her.
